Geomagnetic activity and wind velocity during the Maunder minimum
Following a given classi®cation of geomagnetic activity, we obtained aa index values for the Maunder minimum (1645±1715). It is found that the recurrent and ̄uctuating activities were not appreciable and that the shock activity levels were very low. The aa index level was due almost entirely to the quiet days. Calculated average solar-wind velocities were 194.3 km s from 1657 to 1700 and 218.7 ...
متن کاملThe influence of solar wind turbulence on geomagnetic activity
The importance of space weather and its forecasting is growing as interest in studying geoeffective processes in the Sun – solar wind – magnetosphere – ionosphere coupled system is increasing. In this paper higher order statistical moments of interplanetary magnetic field and geomagnetic SYM-H index fluctuations are compared. The proper description of fluctuations in the solar wind can elucidat...
متن کاملThe spatially resolved refractometer.
PURPOSE To investigate factors controlling the aberrations of the eye, including accommodation, wavelength, and the apodization of the optics of the eye by cone directional selectivity. METHODS We constructed a new implementation of the Spatially Resolved Refractometer (SRR). This is an instrument, based on the Scheiner principle, that allows the rapid psychophysical measurement of the comple...
متن کامل4b.4 a Large Eddy Simulation Model of High Wind Marine Boundary Layers above a Spectrum of Resolved Moving Waves
An improved understanding of the interaction of winds, waves, and currents in the upper ocean at scales of individual waves and wave groups is needed to further develop the next generation of climate, weather, and wave forecast models. For example, coupled wind-waveocean models (Chen et al., 2007; Black et al., 2007) are viewed as critical tools for accurate prediction of tropical cyclone inten...
متن کاملCharacterisation of Arctic Bacterial Communities in the Air above Svalbard
Atmospheric dispersal of bacteria is increasingly acknowledged as an important factor influencing bacterial community biodiversity, biogeography and bacteria-human interactions, including those linked to human health. However, knowledge about patterns in microbial aerobiology is still relatively scarce, and this can be attributed, in part, to a lack of consensus on appropriate sampling and anal...
